Perl6 — The final frontier

As I wrote earlier, I was at The Perl Conference meeting in july 2000 where the Perl development community decided to go for a structural overhaul of the Perl language, then Perl5, and its implementation. I, as many others, was very enthousiastic. Now I, as many others, am left with disappointment.

A very long time the Perl6 community has worked on a redesign of the language and attempts to implement it. It was a long running joke that Perl6 would be released on Christmas, without mentioning a year. Until now.

Perl6 was announced to be officially released on Christmas 2015. Quoting from the brochure:

At christmas of 2015, the official full first version, Perl 6.0.0, will be released. The whole world can really start using it.

But Christmas 2015 came, and went. The official Perl 6 web site, www.perl6.org, did not mention anything about a 6.0.0 release. A couple of days after Christmas only a small line was added about the 94th release of a Perl6 implementation. More details at some wordpress site elsewhere.

No matter what it was that has been released this Christmas, it did not look like the long promised 6.0.0 version is any aspect. I'm afraid the last piece of confidence in a future with Perl6 has been shattered to pieces.
